Daniels Sharpsmart Canada (DSC) is a privately owned company who provide a complete direct sharps service to the Canadian market, with services including the provision of the Daniels Sharpsmart System (Collectors, Accessories and washers), transportation of medical and sharps waste, and treatment disposal of medical waste.

The primary duties of this position include the management of all aspects of compliance (environmental, health and safety). The candidate will work as the sole EH&S Practitioner for all Canadian Operations to oversee and manage the health, safety, compliance and wellbeing of employees of Daniels Sharpsmart Canada. This selected incumbent must have a proven track record of working well independently and enjoy “getting their hands dirty” to ultimately drive success and have a positive impact on the business. This individual will coordinate training, develop required training programs, compile data for reports to various regulating agencies, follow-up with reports and required regulatory agency submissions, as well as assist with special projects.


The successful candidate will be an extremely high energy, well-organized team player, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities, coordinate with employees at all levels, including members of the Management Team, to ensure that quality work is completed.


Candidate must be able to travel to other Canadian facilities approximately 20-30% of their time and must be willing to provide ongoing remote support to all site locations across Canada.


The EH&S Manager will report directly to the Director of Operations.

  • Coordinate with various regulating agencies (MOL, MOE, EC, etc.) for transportation and site permits and updates, as required, as well as follow up with reports and required regulatory agency submissions.
  • Provide leadership and coaching while setting an example of safety practices
  • Partner with Human Resources to get a sense of the overall safety of employee practices and implement corrective processes to improve the wellbeing and engagement levels of employees
  • Ensure ongoing compliance and interpretation to internal procedures and OH&S regulation
  • Conduct regular site inspections and program audits
  • Support and assist in risk assessments and job hazard analysis
  • Lead and support in investigations
  • Develop and maintain EHS policies and procedures
  • Develop and maintain EHS prevention program
  • Develop and maintain employee training program and records
  • Develop and maintain IRS (internal responsibility system) program
  • Develop, support and promote EHS initiatives and processes for the advancement of the Health and Safety
  • Complete trend analysis on inspections and develop corrective actions
  • Lead training and development initiatives and facilitate EHS Orientation for new employees
  • Manage the existing partnership with Workplace Medical Corporation and assist Human Resources in setting tentative new hires up for pre-employment medical screening tests as part of the standardized onboarding process
  • Prepare monthly EHS statistical and progress reports
  • Stay current on industry trends and attend various safety related seminars
  • Monitor and recommend best practices, policies, procedures related to Environment, Health & Safety
  • Hands-on facilitation of the Joint Health & Safety Committee as an advisor
  • Ensure compliance to all environment and OHS related practices and policies (Legislative and internal)
  • Responsible for all training and tracking of training related to Environment, Health & Safety for all Daniels Canada employees to ensure applicable compliance
  • Manage the WHMIS program compliance at the facility
  • Ensure third party safety compliance (contractors, drivers, etc.)
  • Ensure operational execution of the emergency contingency/fire safety plan
  • Analyze incident and accident statistics and make recommendations to prevent a reoccurrence.
  • Ensure investigation and the root cause analysis for all safety related accidents and incidents


  • Lead, support and maintain Daniels Return to Work Program and inform key members, such as Management and Human Resources regarding updates of specific cases
  • Maintain all WSIB related documentation and files of incidents
  • Prepare monthly EHS statistical and progress reports
  • Respond to related inquiries from internal and external personnel
  • Liaise with WSIB account manager and claims adjudicator



  • Support the EHS documentation and filing system both paper and electronic based
  • Prepare and organize PowerPoint presentations for meetings, seminars, and training sessions
  • Monitor and manage the EHS Knowledge Centre (WIKI) and Lighthouse software



  • Post-secondary education in Environmental, Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3-5+ professional years of experience working in a similar role
  • Must have strong analytical skills with ability to identify issues, trends and drive solutions for the betterment of the company
  • Must be comfortable working in an entrepreneurial spirited, fast-paced and changing workplace environment with a desire to make a strong impact on the business
  • Must have strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to positively influence members of the Management Team and lead HSE initiatives
  • Must have experience in conducting safety inspections and audits
  • Must have experience in conducting incident, accident and near miss investigations
  • Must be experienced and very comfortable in developing and conducting training and overseeing ongoing development initiatives
  • Must have a strong passion and desire for the wellbeing and safety of employees
  • Must have a solid understanding and interpretation of various health and safety legislations, policies and procedures
  • Must have excellent initiative, be a self-starter with a keen attention to details
  • Must have the ability to work in a team environment as well as independently
  • Must have the availability to travel overnight without notice
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • French Bilingualism considered an asset
